About Us

What is Emerson?

Emerson open magnet, established in 1975, is the oldest magnet in Wichita Public Schools. Our magnet continues to offer a creative, informal, open approach to learning for all-day kindergarten through fifth grade friends (students).
Our certified staff consists of ten classroom teachers, a resource teacher and paraprofessional, and one administrative liaison. Support staff includes art, music, PE, media specialist, band and orchestra teachers as well as a nurse, psychologist, speech clinician, and office staff.

Programs

Emerson offers a choice, within the Wichita school district, of a full day kindergarten through 5th grade that provides its children, parents, and teachers with a creative, informal approach to learning and teaching.

We believe that learning is a process of exploring and experiencing, shared by all. Teaching is the organization and presentation of information in ways that are meaningful to each unique child. Each student's curiosity is respected and encouraged. We value children experiencing education, not just learning information. Emerson friends leave with a love of learning that benefits them for the rest of their lives.

The success of our open approach depends on individuals taking responsibility for their actions and decisions. Emerson emphasizes a sense of community and sustains it by reinforcing these virtues of honesty and integrity based on mutual respect and a caring environment:

  • Self-discipline
  • Compassion
  • Respect
  • Responsibility
  • Giving
  • Honesty
  • Perseverance
